The “Unko Drill: Hiragana” for ages 5 & 6 is a hiragana workbook that’s part of the incredibly popular Unko Drill series. Unko Drill is a series of books that makes learning Japanese more fun by theming the lessons around poop, or “unko”. The workbook provides plenty of practice for hiragana writing and also teaches other things that go hand-in-hand with learning hiragana, such as when to use half-size characters and when to use the dakuten, or double dots symbol, and the handakuten, or small circle.
The book doesn’t just hand you the information though; it also provides fun ways to remember the new words you just learned through simple puzzles like connecting the dots and filling in the blanks. The book also allows for more interactive ways of learning that go beyond just writing the characters, through colorful cut-out cards that can be used for a game to form words in hiragana and cute stickers to encourage a job well done.
Structure:
- The book teaches the correct stroke order for writing hiragana and the boxes for writing provide ample space to write the characters properly.
- The book teaches vocabulary words by showing colorful pictures and asking the readers to fill in the blanks with the correct hiragana to identify what’s being shown. Quizzes and puzzles test the readers to help them remember the lessons.
- Answers to all of the exercises are included towards the end of the book.
- The book is written entirely in hiragana, except for the portion telling the parents how they can help their kids learn.
Recommended for you if:
- You have basic level Japanese and want to practice how to write hiragana characters.
- You want to immerse yourself in the same way Japanese children start learning about hiragana.
- You want to learn basic Japanese vocabulary words through the use of colorful illustrations.
