From the Foundations to Study — Passing the Eiken Level 2 Handbook

This is an excellent study guide to prepare Japanese students for grade 2 of the Eiken, the Jitsuyo Eigo Gino Kentei (Test in Practical English Proficiency), one of the most widely used English-language testing programs in Japan.

The book is aimed to be used by elementary school students and above, with a lot of the vocabulary aimed for older students.

Three friendly characters — Joe, Hana, and Gonta — guide the reader through this book. The first 3 chapters are dedicated to the reading section of the Eiken, with lots of information, activities, and mock questions with a focus on new and difficult vocabulary. The 4^th chapter is dedicated to the writing section, with advice, examples, and the chance to practice writing about different topics. The 5^th chapter is listening, and there is a link where you can download the mp3s from. The 6^th chapter is the speaking element of the test, and there are lots of great tools to build up students’ speaking ability and confidence in a step-by-step process.

If you are teaching students Eiken for the Level 2 exam, and you are happy for them to have a book with lots of Japanese explanations and advice, then this is a great book for you. If your child is studying for the Eiken Level 2, then likewise, pick up this book!
